Hickson Street Lookout

On the way into Newcastle we detoured to the Hickson Street Lookout, the hang gliding launch pad in Newcastle. The path is hidden behind the utilities fenced off but once you join it, it's barely 100 metres on. Lovely sweeping views of Burwood beach and the coastline.

If you want a free activity with huge payoff, this one is a gem.

Note that it's not fenced, so be extra careful with children and stay well clear of the launch pad if the hang gliders are there.

Practicalities:

14 Hickson St, Merewether.

Hickson Street Lookout

There is a family friendly path down to the beach if you want a longer walk, though note it's stairs and there are no toilets in the area, at the beach or the lookout.

  3. That view over Burwood Beach is spectacular, but those sheer drops are definitely no joke. It’s the perfect spot for that "huge payoff" Lydia mentioned, especially if you manage to catch the hang gliders in action; it adds such a cool, cinematic vibe to the coastline.
