I was slightly alarmed when our children were the only children on the whole plane from Singapore to Male. I had an idea there wouldn't be many kids, given the limited accommodation options - even the Club Med said they weren't really for children! A number of friends had questioned our decision to go to the Maldives, generally asking me what the kids would do there, or assuming we weren’t taking the kids with us. The purpose of the trip was for my husband, a lapsed diver, to reignite his passion and dive one of the worlds best dive destinations before it was too late. What the kids and I would do was hang at the beach and pool. That was the plan, and I didn’t really understand why people thought it was so odd to take the children with us.
It is known as a honeymoon destination and it did take a lot of work to find accommodation that met our requirement – no seaplane transport (blew our budget), resort that (a) took children, (b) took more than 1 child, (c) had adjoining rooms, not 2 separate bungalows. We had the choice of 3 resorts, and one was shut for renovations. So we chose to stay at the Sheraton Full Moon Resort and Spa, mainly because it was low rise, and the other resort was a tall hotel style accommodation.
We got a great deal through the travel agent that included half board. On arrival, I was slightly disappointed to discover that one of the 2 restaurants covered in our half board dinner package was a buffet, however, our first night was Arabian night and the standard of food on offer was exceptional and a lot of the food was cooked to order, rather than sitting in bain maries for an hour. The buffet had a different theme each night so you weren't faced with the same food each evening. Happy to say, while the kids adored the buffet, the adults at least weren’t suffering either.
Our rooms were on the beach and had a beautiful outlook (and allowed me to take the 3 year old out on the beach at 6am when she woke, with ease, allowing the others to sleep in.) I could also watch the older kids swim and snorkel from our deck, while she had an afternoon sleep.
There is a kids club, where kids can be dropped on the way to the Spa (or just to spend time there), but the under 4's must be supervised by their parent (or babysitter). As a result, I spent a bit of time there with our kids, escaping the midday sun. My 3 year old adored it - she painted coral, played on the playground and fed exotic fish in the ocean while my older boys played the Wii. The spa, which I didn’t use, has couples treatments as well as the normal array of facials, massages and so on. It’s a beautiful set up around a pond with birdlife, and the treatment rooms are little bungalows.
The resort is predominately honeymooners (and divers), however the staff in the restaurants (when we ventured a la carte), never once made us feel unwelcome. When we hurried out of the sensational fine dining restaurant because our 3 year old was getting loud, the waiter seemed genuinely surprised we weren't staying for dessert.
All restaurants had a very cheap kids menu, however when at the a la carte (on half board) the kids could also order off the adult menu (which suited our 11 year old). There were supplement prices so you could do the beach dinners. We did the Stars and Sand night, where they dug tables and chairs into the sand and built bonfires and had a 'fine dining' experience under the stars. It was absolutely amazing. They didn't charge for the 3 year old and the kids were 50% off the supplement, so it was really good value for the five of us. This dinner had live music and was so beautiful and opulent, it almost brought tears to my eyes. It was a beautiful setting and had an air of romance that even seduced the children, who were awed throughout the experience.
At lunch we often ate at the bar, where the kids would play chess on a different table while my husband and I could relax and enjoy each others company. Each night at sunset there is shark feeding at the bar and the kids could either play on the sand or watch the feeding while my husband and I lay on the daybeds nearby – for a brief half hour we were honeymooners again.
The kids were also only charged 50% for the excursions and water sports, and they also had good value packages of different water sports for 2 people. The older kids had some sort of activity every day on the package - canoeing, knee boarding, tubing, snorkelling etc. The charges for diving was much less than I'd been lead to believe by people who had been diving at other resorts in the Maldives, and my husband got 6 dives for the same price as if he'd gone diving here. At no point did I feel we were being over charged, which was what I had expected, as you are more or less a captive market. I was pleasantly surprised. The dive centre is a Padi certified one so you can also learn to dive and they also had children courses.
I would recommend this hotel to any family considering a trip to the Maldives. The half board package through the travel agent is great value and includes transfers from the airport (normally $100 per person). I found the website didn't really do it justice, nor did the brochure. The Maldives, while normally a honeymoon destination can also be a magnificent and enjoyable holiday for families. My kids loved it, and my husband and I enjoyed some vague reminders of that time before children when we revelled in each others company.
Just because you are travelling with kids, doesn’t mean you have to make the trip about them. Children will love where ever you go, so don’t rule out the exotic or romantic destinations. Plan carefully and the world is still your oyster.
Hi Lydia, a really good review, thank you! I've always wanted to go the Maldives but the main rn I haven't is that I hear its very expensive. This sounds gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI'm a big believer in holidays not being all about the kids which is why ours have been to half the wineries in South America! Kids are very adaptable and a new experience us just that, new and different, and just as entertaining.
Sounds lovely!

So very true - kids don't stop travel, they change it slightly, but you can still do everything you want to. And your post proves it. This looks like a great value holiday, I might just leave this open for hubby to see ... :) Thanks for joining in my #wednesdaywanderlust link party.
ReplyDeleteWow! It looks beautiful - and what a good summary! We are just about to have our first and have been loving traveling so we are interested how we will combine the two. Maybe Maldives need to be on the list - stunning!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you picked the perfect resort in the Maldives for a family vacation. To me if they offer kids clubs then even if predominantly the clientele are couples they are also trying to attract the family market.
ReplyDeleteIt shows that knowing what you need from a resort and putting the time into researching all your options pays off.
Thanks for sharing this post! My bucket list is growing ever longer while our child-free time is growing shorter. :) So it's encouraging to see others take their kids on trips even to places like might seem like they'd not be quite as kid friendly and to find out otherwise!
ReplyDeleteThis is a really heartening post. It sounds like you picked the perfect resort for you, and had a wonderful family break.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you found the right balance of romantic couple time and fun for the kids. I also believe that you can travel without making the kids the centre of everything and that they get a lot out of experiences that aren't specifically designed for them.
ReplyDeleteThe place looks great but I would love to see more pictures:) we have always included our 2 kids in our travels (other than a couple of adult only trips in over 15 years) - but I have to say it does help with you have at least one full evening to yourself. Cruises accept kids in their program unsupervised at 3 yr old (some at 2 even) and we did do quite a bit of cruising for that reason, as well as went on some extended family trips (built in sitting at least one night!)
ReplyDeleteI totally agree! Thanks for the review - we have never been to the Maldives and would really like to go some time. We take our kids on almost all vacations, and you are right, they will have fun anywhere! Thanks again for sharing. Visited through #WeekendWanderlust!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to the Maldives someday and I'm glad that you were able to find one to accommodate your whole family! Thanks so much for linking up with #WeekendWanderlust!
ReplyDeleteGreat review - sounds like a wonderful resort for adults and children alike! The Stars and Sands nights sounds fantastic. Wish I was on a tropical beach somewhere just now :-)
ReplyDeleteGosh I wish I was there right now. You have given lots of relevant information. It seems the resort was very happy to have children there. Sounds AMAZING.
ReplyDeleteThis worked out really well for you all, though you did have to put the hard years in to find this place. Good on you.
ReplyDeleteGood for you for trying a non-traditional destination with your family. Sounds like the Maldives have an untapped market they should be thinking more about!
ReplyDeleteMy parents also took my sister and I to non-traditional locations for vacation - no problem with that at all! We just wanted a beach to play on - so easy!
ReplyDeleteThank you for linking up with the #REASONS2TRAVEL linkup!
Wow, this looks stunning - the Maldives are somewhere I've never been, but I'd actually consider it more now I have my daughter, as she loves the sea and I need a nice chilled-out holiday in the sun! Definitely agree that there's always a child-friendly option if you look. I'm very tempted... #mondayescapes
ReplyDeleteAwnnn I spent my honeymoon there... such a perfect place.
ReplyDeleteNice to know about this hotel, who knows, maybe one day I will return there after I have kids :D
Happy to have you on #MondayEscapes

ReplyDeleteGreat advice. With a three year-old and nine-month-old we have started to think more about where we go based on their needs but I don't think I'd rule out anywhere just because we are a family. We might plan differently, pack more clobber and make sure there is some kids entertainment so we can enjoy a few adult moments like you did. The Maldives is somewhere I'm still to go so thanks for the inspiration #myfavouritetrip
ReplyDeleteI am SO jealous of your trip. I have travelled so much but have never been to the Maldives yet it's somewhere I have always wanted to visit. I'm a diver and a big beach fan (I live by the sea too). It looks absolutely stunning. I too would probably associate it with honeymooners so it's wonderful to hear you took your kids. I would love to take my little two year old, your experiences sound ideal. Thanks very much for linking up to #MyFavouriteTrip Polly x
ReplyDeleteThe Maldives has always been on my bucket list and I not sure we will make it there before we start a family, so it's good to know that you were able to go as a family and have a wonderful time!! So glad you linked up! Great post!
ReplyDeleteNice to revisit this post from when I first read it nearly a year ago. :) How many more places have you traveled with the family since then? Oh, and thanks for linking up with us on #TravelTuesday!
ReplyDeleteMany, Many more places! A whole blog full ;)
DeleteThis looks like Paradise, Lydia. I'd love to visit the Maldives, especially since my husband is a diver too. It's a good thing you found the appropriate accommodations for a family with children. Even though this is a honeymoon destination, they should be able to accommodate children as well. Thanks for joining us for #TheWeeklyPostcard.
ReplyDeleteI loved traveling with my kids, but I have to admit I really love that they are adults now and Jim and I can really enjoy some alone time now. Great article.
ReplyDeleteHi Lydia, thanks for delighting us with your travels again. I've always wanted to go to I've always wanted to go the Maldives and never made it (at least not yet). How do you manage to stay on top of it and still raise kids? You seem to be a great mother, wife, and a great traveler; When my son was young we took him with us wherever we traveled, but I didn't get to see and do all the things I had planned because I had to accommodate a toddler. You, on the other hand seem to have a blast with your children. How do you do that and still enjoy your vacations? Thanks for joining me for #TheWeeklhyPostcard.
ReplyDeleteYou've asked the interesting question. In my opinion, little kids like everything, you just have to sell it. So vineyards are 'grape farms' and in Paris we toured many sites in terms of 'and this is where the lady who got her head chopped off stayed when blah blah'. I actually think the hard part is the teens. They love some stuff but they can make it harder when they aren't interested...As for how do we enjoy it? I do something for them, they do something for me. We go to a theme park, they go to a museum, we spend a 'resort' day, we tour the sites the next day...give and take in every relationship, including with your kids. Maybe that's a post I need to write. Good thinking. Maldives is great for kids (for everyone) - it's the cost that makes it hard...
DeleteYes definitely a post in the making there.
DeleteI wanted to visit the Maldives when we were living in Asia, but I never made it over. I do shy away from any small hotel that advertises itself as "romantic" or "filled with antiques" when I'm traveling with young kids, but I think that if there's a kids club, they must certainly expect kids to be guests. Traveling when my kids were younger was so much easier because they were just happy to be with mom & dad. Now that they are 11-17 years old, it's been a lot harder to honor everyone's interests (or lack of interest, as the case may be.)
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a great holiday. I do always seem to be in the minority though - I love buffets. When they're done well, they're better than most other options and you have the choice of going for your favourite items - nothing says holiday more :)
ReplyDeleteGlad you had such a good experience, even with having young kids! It always makes me happy to hear of restaurants that welcome families, and don't make them feel like they are a burden. Also good to hear of all of the deals (50% off for children activities) and such. Thanks for sharing!!!
ReplyDeleteYou make me want to go there straight away. I love that they welcome kids. Ours are grown but I would love to go there.
ReplyDeleteThe Maldives is just amazing. You've given me food for thought as you can take the kids! #wanderlustkids
ReplyDeleteI've been to the Maldives before kids, but actually stayed on a boat the entire time. It's a place I've always wanted to return to. We are from Canada so it's pretty far for us to go, but I love that you made it work with kids! #wanderlustkids
ReplyDeleteWe're from Oz - it's about 14 hours for us. Which by Australian standards is not that far...our next trip is 32 hours - yikes!
DeleteI think many places are enhanced by taking kids :) Maldives I've not been to yet but since we're talking about a ticking clock on how long it will be there, I am sure I'll visit while the children are young.
ReplyDeleteVisiting from #wanderlustkids
Oh wow, what a holiday. Like many, I had thought the Maldives were only for couples and that my hubby and I had missed our chance but I'd seriously consider it as a destination to visit with our son! Thanks for linking up to #wanderlustkids
ReplyDeleteWow what an incredible holiday. Maldives is definitely on my must do list, I have wanted to go for so long, and we used to dive too - would love the chance to try it again. I would take my children with me everywhere and you have proved that you can do just that! Thanks for linking up to Monday Escapes
ReplyDeleteI bet they made amazing memories of one of the most gorgeous places on earth!
