An Expensive Mistake - A Cautionary Tale

We were packed and organised. The alarm went off. All five of us were dressed and ready to go. We just needed the taxi to arrive, which I'd booked in advance the day before for 5.30 am. Or so I thought. At 5.40 we called to check on the whereabouts, only to discover I'd forgotten to change the PM to AM on the online booking time. A costly mistake.

While they said they could send first available, we were fast running out of time. Cancelling the cab, after another few minutes debating what to do, we jumped in our own car, figuring it was better to pay for one airfare again than five, but hoping to only have to pay the exorbitant parking in the terminal car park.

There was a mini traffic jam on approach to the terminal, and the minutes ticked by as we sat at a stand still. We finally pulled into the drop off bay with six minutes until the check in closed.

Madly racing, we printed the boarding passes and ran to the bag drop counter as they announced they were about to close the flight. The attendant looked at his watch (and no doubt the mildly hysterical mother of three) and waved us over to an empty counter.
We'd made it under the wire, for at least four of us.

Now a stressful few minutes seeing if my partner would make the same flight, having gone to park the car and then needing to return to the terminal on foot. As we'd used the long term parking before, he knew there was no time for that and fortunately decided he didn't even have time to make the $45 a day car park, but take the nearest driveway available.

Miraculously, he appeared, $448 poorer, but we were checked in and all together. Next hurdle was to make the gate on time, as there was a huge queue at security, and the flight was now boarding. We had 12 minutes before the gate closed.

The queue crept along, and if we were stopped for the residue test, we would miss the flight completely. The woman in front of me had a baby still in her bjorn, so exasperatingly, I had to wait while she ever so slowly undid all the straps, then moved through the process.

Finally we were through, with only a few minutes to make the gate. Needless to say, it was the furthest away, at the end of the terminal. Unbeknownst to me, we had the wrong gate number on our boarding pass, but luck smiled on us, and they announced the pending gate closure just as we were about to run past the correct gate. So we made it. Without a minute to spare. Literally.

We were all on board. As was our luggage.

I do not cope well with stress. While I didn't cry, I'm pretty sure I would have burst into tears had someone drawn the line which would lead to our downfall. It was all my fault. I had no one else to blame.

I am grateful to my wonderful partner who never once gave me grief about my very expensive, stupid error. I am thankful that my kids, for once, moved quickly and quietly through the airport, and my eldest excelled himself by taking responsibility of the youngest while I ran ahead through the crowds.

I am thankful for the smooth check in process of Jetstar - had they not announced the dedicated bag drop counter as we entered the airport, we wouldn't have made the flight.

What I've learnt:
1. Always, ALWAYS,  check the AM/PM button when booking taxis online.
2. Have a plan B. Have a cut off time that you must jump in the car. Better to pay for parking or buy a new ticket for one than for five.
3.When time is tight, work as a team. (Had the error been reversed, I'm not proud to say I may not have been as understanding, and that certainly wouldn't help the situation. Though I will remember this moment for the years to come.)

Ironically, we were on the early morning flight to save money. We got the airfares for a steal in a Jetstar sale, saving $400 across the five fares. Yes, the very $400 we ended up paying on parking.

This is not our worst airport fiasco, that one I'm still recovering from, but it will eventually make it to this blog, as people can learn a lot from my idiocy. But for now, I need to find an extra $448 to pay for my mistake.

  1. Oh Lydia!!! How stressful for you! I couldn't have coped. I can just imagine how anxious you must have been sprinting through to the gate and waiting for your partner. I'm glad you all made it though. I can't wait to hear the other story now!! :) x

  3. What a stressful start to your holiday! Thankfully you all finally got on the plane! What is it about airports that always seems to lead to a hike in stress levels?! xx Lucy #TeamIBOT

  4. Oh no!! We have had the AM PM costly mistake too. Only it was booking the cheap non-refundable non-changeable flights. I had to be there by mid morning for an event, but Husband booked me to leave at 6.20pm instead of 6.20am which would have made me miss the entire thing. It ended up costing a couple of hundred to fix it. In his defense though, for some reason they had the PM flights highlighted at the top of the screen (because they were a super special) and he thought that meant it was the first flight out for the day. We now double and triple check our AMs and PMs.
So yeah ... I feel your pain.
    Happy holidays!

  5. Over the weekend I made the costly mistake of dropping my phone and smashing it to bits - if that makes you feel any better. Mistakes happen - we've just got to deal with them and move on. Hope you had a wonderful trip despite the inauspicious start.

  6. It's horrible when things get off to a bad start. I thought the plane wouldn't leave if the luggage was on board and the passengers aren't. That's what I've always clung to when we've been running late anyway. Hope the rest of your holiday was good :)

  7. Oh no! I will also own up to making the am/pm mistake several times. I hope you all had a lovely and relaxing trip to make up for the stressful start!

  8. OH NO! That is just so shitty! Clearly the taxi's online form needs a check to say, PM Or AM? Are you sure?

  9. OUCH! I would be crying FOR SURE! Good on you for holding it together and for choosing a partner who is so understanding!! x Aroha (for #teamIBOT)

  10. Noooo Lydia that is devastating, and I'd be spewing, talk about stress levels - wow. That was a smart idea to do that though so only had to pay for one flight! We always take our car to those places that drop you off etc, but that's because we live too far away for a taxi. I'M SOOOO glad your awesome partner made it on the same flight. And I hope the rest of holiday went swimmingly xx Em

  14. Glad you made it after all but it sucks that it cost you an extra $448 - as with everything I guess a lesson well learned !!! Our partners sound very similar - A would have been much more accommodating than me !!!

  16. Oh wow, I think I would definitely have been crying by that point, in fact I'm almost certain I would have been a hysterical mess! I'm glad you all made it, and I have to agree, Jetstar have been awesome every time we've flown with them too.

  18. Glad it all worked out in the end. I am such a stresser when travelling I double, triple quadruple check everything. That being said we have only flown twice in all the time we have had kids!!

  20. Oh Lydia, I held my breath right to the end!! Like you, I probably would have been complaining if it was someone else's fault, but good on your gorgeous partner for being so understanding. xx

  23. Wow! What a nightmare! I have to admit though that I can't wait to hear the worse story. Thanks for linking up today.

  24. Oh wow, that was nail biting. I'm so glad you all made your flight. My partner is teaching me the same lesson about not giving each other a hard time for the honest mistakes that we all make. He's a good sort like that. ;)

  25. oh I feel for you!!! as a mum of three, who also travels a lot we have had our share our stressful muddle ups at the airport. Your story is a great reminder of how easy it is to not hit the right AM/PM button, or misread the board at the airport, or leave a passport on the kitchen bench (touch wood neither of us do that!!!). Well done all of you for handling the crisis and chaos! x

  26. What a stressful experience! Like my comment above, I still don't think I would have handled it well. I freak out when we're running late for school.

  27. I'm already a nervous traveller even when things are going smoothly. I definitely would have lost it over this! It's no wonder I don't travel very often. Sigh. At least you learn from these experiences. xo

  28. Oh that would have stressed me out for sure. I always worry I haven't booked the taxi right but they always turn up thank goodness.

  29. What an experience. We've done something similar.

  30. Definitely a cautionary tale Lydia - I don;t think I would have recovered the entire flight. I hope you were able to have strong beverage to help recover!

  31. Ouch!! That was too close... but then, all's well that end's well :)
I made the same mistake with bus bookings once :/ ended up having to pay double fare :(

  32. Good lessons learnt!! I am one of those people that arrives 2 hours before the 2 hours you have to be there by!
And it's so frustrating how when you are in a hurry everyone else around you seems to have the go slows!
    Glad you made it.

  33. We once missed a plane in Egypt. Egypt Air cancelled our flight and we didn't know. It was probably the worst travel experience I have ever been through because it meant we also missed our international connection. I am glad you made it. I'll remember your story next time I'm sitting at the airport thinking - this is ridiculous why do I always have to arrive so early.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Wow that is cutting it close! I can only imagine the stress! I have almost missed 2 flights in the last 5 months and I'm so worried now. What sucks is that the only flight I took in the past 5 months for which I arrived early got delayed - that always happens doesn't it? I had a similar freak out literally last month - my mom drove me to the airport as I was heading back home to the UK and we actually left about 3h30 early just to make sure (it usually only takes about 40 mins to drive to the airport) but we got stuck in traffic for over 2 hours - it was so abnormal. I arrived at the airport at 7 and my flight was at 8. My mom dropped me off at the departure and we said goodbye quickly as she went to park the car. There was a huge queue, so I panicked and the employees were so mean until some other passengers started complaining for me (as I was just sobbing like a baby) and my mom arrived to take charge as well. They ended up calling all London passengers forward - there was about 8 of us and it was too late for our luggage so we had to go somewhere else to drop them. It was a nightmare - I said goodbye to my mom so quickly before running through security and to my gate. And the worst was that once it was over and I started relaxing, I realised they had given up my seat (that I had prebooked months previously) and had stuck me in a middle row seat, which ended up being between two slightly larger women. I felt so terrible I burst into tears when I sat down. I felt so ashamed I did that. ...bleh it's horrible to think about the whole ordeal.

  35. Oh, that's too bad! I think it's inevitable, though, that if you travel frequently, you'll eventually have an error like this one. I'm glad you made your flight, and I hope you aren't beating yourself up too much over the added expense!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Ouch! Knock on wood, we haven't had that happen to us thanks to my husband's insistence that we arrive at the airport hours and hours early. I've complained about having to waste time in the airport before, but maybe it's not so bad....

  37. Oh my goodness, that sounds like one exhausting morning to get to the airport! I'm so glad that all of y'all ended up making the flight! Sometimes it just takes one big mistake to make sure you catch yourself later on.

  38. I hate it when that happens, saving money somewhere only to have to spend it on an unplanned thing... good thing you guys made it on time.

  39. Oh my goodness, I felt stressed out just reading your story! I just hate feeling rushed and panicked at the airport - it's the worst feeling that you might miss a flight. Glad it worked out in the end!

  40. That's stressing me out just reading it! I can't imagine how much more stressful it would have been to actually live it...! I'm glad you made your flight in the end, and thanks for the cautionary tale! I will be triple checking all taxi bookings from now on!

  41. Phew, stressful but so glad it had a happy ending. So many 'flight' stories don't. Thanks for joining in #wednesdaywanderlust

  42. Wow - I would have been really stressed too... and I would definitely have been annoyed at my husband if he made the same mistake! :-) So pleased you made it. Airport parking fees are criminal!

  43. I was stressed just by reading the story. Glad you guys made it. This a.m./p.m. think also applies to flying times. I have known people who have lost flights because they have messed up the mornings with the evenings. And, it also applies for when you are setting up your alarm. Pay attention if you do not want to oversleep when you have to catch a plane or a ride.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Oh, Lydia, how horrible! Don't feel bad though, it can happen to anybody, but I'm sure it was not a pleasant experience.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I don't know how you kept calm. I would have been a wreck. I'm one of those that likes to be early. I still can't get used to getting to the plane only one hour ahead. I get too stressed. This would probably kill me!

    ReplyDelete
  46. I must say you certainly conveyed your stress in your writing. I was on pins and needles in suspense waiting to find out if you caught your flight. I'm so relieved you did. Now, I wonder what the other story is.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Wow, that would have stressed me out, too. So glad you made your flight.

    ReplyDelete
  48. That sounds super stressful!! I cannot imagine paying $400+ for parking. But you all managed to do the sums right in the midst of the panic - to pay for the parking rather than miss the flight. I almost missed a flight once because I remembered the wrong timing and omg, my heart was pounding every second until we were safely on the plane.

Thank you for linking up on Travel Tuesday!
