Detour - A day trip to Ettalong

There isn't a Sydneysider who hasn't spent time on the Central Coast, usually Avoca, Terrigal or McMasters Beach. There are beach rentals galore, and crowds to go with them in the summer time.

If you don't have the money or time for a weekend getaway, and want to escape without the Friday night traffic jam out of Sydney, head up to Ettalong for lunch by boat.

The ferries depart Palm Beach at 10.30 or 12 noon, and return 2.30, 3.30 or 4.20, perfect for a stroll and leisurely lunch. Allow time to look for some free parking up the road, as the car park at the ferry pier is pricey.

Once on board, enjoy the view for the thirty minute ride past Lion island and Pearl Beach. Then disembark at a delightful location with lovely natural views and a sleepy village feel.

We strolled up the main street and came across the charming Coast restaurant, though there are plenty of places to eat to choose from. There is even the more upmarket Box on the Water, which is a glass-walled restaurant on the foreshore, but you will need to book in advance for that one.

Coast is a laid back café with great food and a lovely ambiance - the food was quick despite being almost full when we arrived. There is a huge range of vegetarian options as well as the crowd-pleasing burger and chips. The room is charming and there is a lovely covered outdoor area, so you can enjoy the sunny weather too.

After lunch, head down to the beach or walk to the popular playground. It's the perfect way to enjoy the sunshine and being outdoors with such pretty views.

For us it was time to head back, and an easy trip home by boat as the sun sparkled on the water. However, if you're organised, book a night at the Mantra and stay over - there's a cute cinema, or barbeques near the park for dinner by the water.

There's nothing quite as relaxing as travelling to lunch by boat, and it's the perfect way to escape the city if you're time poor.

  6. It's interesting how much Ettalong resembles California's Central Coast. Your pictures could very well be from Big Sur, or Pebble Beach for instance. They look very much like that area. I'd love to visit Australia someday. It looks great. Thank you for joining #TheWeeklyPostcard again this week-end.
