We had a few days in Berlin, and time was of the essence to see and do as much as possible. We learnt a few things the hard way, and this is a brief post to share what the guide book didn't tell me.
Tip 1:
We hadn't booked the tickets to the Reichstag before we arrived, but went on our first day as it was high on our list. On arrival, we discovered that we couldn't get in and the first available tickets were for the Sunday, four days later and the day of the Marathon, so no use to us.
We returned to the hotel disappointed, and mentioned it in passing to the concierge. She announced "I can book you a table around 3.30 at the café on the roof for coffee and cake." And she did. The next day we zipped through the separate line for security, without the lengthy wait for our timed session, and went straight to the top for afternoon tea. It is pricey but worth it for the speed and ease. Then we strolled through the dome like the rest of the tourists, at our leisure.
Tip 2:
Tip 3:
Always have enough change in coins to buy a train ticket. Twice in the week I ended up needing to buy a train ticket where the machine only took coins. Both times I had to go and buy something to break the notes I had. No one would give me change. It's rare, but it happened to me twice, which if you are in a hurry, is an unnecessary stress.
Tip 4:
Plan your day a little in advance, and that way you know if you need a day ticket or just the singles. The day ticket is great value if you will be doing four or more trips.
Walk into the alleys and arcades. For us, it feels like trespassing, but you will walk into a building complex to discover shops & restaurants in the inside courtyard. This is the appeal of Berlin, it takes you awhile to adjust the way you look at things and see it properly.
A few hours after we arrived, we were looking for somewhere for lunch, and couldn't find anywhere to eat. It was odd. We were in one of the main tourist spots but there were only a couple of chain restaurants in view. A few days later, having sought out a number of famous restaurants hidden away in an old Jewish school and inside an apartment complex, we realised we hadn't really been looking properly on our first day, and had missed what was right before our eyes.

I've been in Berlin a couple of years ago, but only for a day. I wish I could have seen at least some of the museums, but didn't have time for much. I hope to return someday. Great tips for exploring Berlin!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the fabulous tips for Berlin Lydia. It sure pays to do your research ahead of tip, if you have your heart set on going to a particular attraction. Concierges can be very helpful people too, so I'm pleased to hear you got to go to the Reichstag anyway. Alleys and arcades can be fascinating, can't they :-)
ReplyDeleteExcellent tips particularly using the concierge who can get you anything. We didn't used to know how valuable they are as a travel resource, but they sure are. We always, where possible, have the skip to queue tickets.
ReplyDeleteWe went to Berlin some years ago and would love to go back and see how it's changed. The Reichstag sounds a bit like the Eiffel Tower in that you definitely need to book in advance if you want to see it on a particular day. Great tip from the concierge though! #TheWeeklyPostcard
ReplyDeleteI'll be keeping some of your tips for my visit to Berlin this December. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI went to Berlin years ago, the main thing I can remember about Europe is always have coins and tissues in your purse in case you need to go to the toilet
ReplyDeleteLove your very practical tips! Germany is one of the countries I've been dying to visit. Will come and revisit this post when I do!
ReplyDeleteReally useful tips about Berlin - always good to know the clever ways to skip the queues. It's so long since I've been, I'd love to go back. #citytripping
ReplyDeleteFantastic tips...I always find the best way to get into a popular building with a view is to visit the bar or restaurant. Pretty much the same views without the queues and at least you are paying for food rather than just a ticket! Thanks for linking to #citytripping
ReplyDeleteThe concierge is a valuable resource and, as you found, knows how to do things a bit differently. I like using their knowledge to get you "in" because of their connections and goodwill.
ReplyDeleteThese are great tips. It's sort of crazy how popular major museums have become. In paris we booked tours primarily to avoid the lines and the last time I visited NY's Met Museum it was more crowded than a train station at rush hour! It's helpful to know to book these museums ahead!
ReplyDeleteThat's a great tip for visiting the Reichstag! I've been to the building myself, but now I have a way to go back without dealing with the red tape! #wkendtravelinspiration
ReplyDeleteI haven't been to Berlin yet, which reminds me ..why haven't we.
ReplyDeleteThank you! Would love to travel there!
ReplyDeleteGreat tips for travel and wonderful images.
ReplyDeleteGreat tips and wonderful photos, Lydia. We've been to Germany several times and to Berlin once - all of which trips we enjoyed very much. Your photos brought back happy travel memories.
ReplyDeleteThank you for joining the Travel Tuesday meme.
Great tips to go to this beautiful city I went there with school ages ago. The Berlin wall was still there. Although a nice part is still there as you showed.

ReplyDeleteHorray to that concierge!
Book online, checked!
Coins only, really??? We still talk Berlin? Embarrassing....
Tip 5... Braunschweig has that also, in some places :-)
I was in Berlin only twice. Before and after the wall fell.
Hope you enjoyed it more than I did. Guess so :-)
We missed visiting the Reichstag as well, when we were in Berlin in July last year, because we hadn't booked. Wish I knew about being able to go to the rooftop cafe. I loved visiting Berlin and look forward to visiting again one day! Thanks for participating in Monday Murals Lydia.
