Hawaii is comprised of eight main islands, six of which tourists can easily visit and stay on. One that should make your bucket list is Hawai'i island, the Big Island.
Pu'uhouna o Honaunau National Historic Park
Hawai'i offers a huge range of once in a life time experiences. On our snorkel trip to the Captain Cook monument, we saw whales up close (and a tail and fin breach), spinner dolphins put on a show chasing our raft and a pod of approx. one hundred dolphins slept nearby where we were snorkelling. At the stunning Mauna Kea Beach, we swam with 18 turtles over the course of two hours - remember, look but don't touch, and don't chase them or harass them (and it's well worth doing the beautiful walk from the pretty Hapuna Beach over to Mauna Kea).
Lava tubes

The Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park offers one to two days of walks and drives, up close to the craters and with stunning scenery of lava and it's path of destruction. Stay into the night and see the red glow.
Steam vents

Snorkelling with Manta Rays is a bucket list experience, and rated one of the top underwater adventures in the world, by divers. Children as young as 8 can participate, and the tours are well managed and great value. I can not put into words how amazing this was. The rays somersault in front of you, sometimes centimetres from your body. While they vary in size, one ray, known as Big Bertha, has the wing span of a small plane! The experience is astounding and awe-inspiring.
Stargazing at Mauna Kea will offer you astounding views and access to the stars, the added bonus of snow is seasonal. Yes, it snows on the Big Island!

Big island is, as the name suggests, big. So move around. We were based in Kahaluu-Keauhou for the snorkelling adventures, then moved to Pahoa to visit the rainforest side and volcanoes, then back to the resort town of Waikoloa for some beach visits. Before booking, look at the activities you want to do, and work out the distances in the car - you may want to move closer for a few days.
The island's scenery varies greatly in an hour. We went from beaches to rural fields, past the snow capped mountains and then through stunning gulches and rainforest falls, all on our way to
Hilo.
The Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park is beyond extraordinary for topography. Explore the crater top, the lava tubes, the trail of devastation and the long history of lava spilling over Chain o Crater road. Each is massively different to the other, awe inspiring and remarkable.
If heading to Hawaii, don't just stick to Waikiki - the real adventure begins a forty minute flight away.

Haha I just went to Hawaii and didn't get much further than Waikiki! Big Island looks amazing!
ReplyDeleteI'll be visiting Big Island later this year...and this post is really making me look forward to it even more!
ReplyDeleteOh, I love, love, love the Big Island. I've been twice. I had meant to go to a different island the second time, but I love the Big Island so much I ended up going back. It has such a cool feel and there is so much to see. Thank you for the reminder x
ReplyDeleteI haven't explored past Oahu, but the Big Island looks amazing! I would love the dolphins, rays and volcanos, although the size of those rays sounds slightly terrifying!
ReplyDeleteIt snows there?! Wow, I never knew that. So many wonderful things to do there, looks amazing.
ReplyDeleteWe went to the Big Island in Feb and LOVED it. Volcanoes National Park was amazing. We did a road trip around the island so we were able to see so many different sides to the island. Can't wait to go back!
ReplyDeleteWow! I'd love to check out those lava tubes!
ReplyDeleteI would love to check out Hawaii but it doesn't strike me as a destination one travels to when travelling solo! hehe
ReplyDeleteAnother of my dream destinations! One day ...... In the meantime I'll continue reading about my travel dreams via travel blogs!
ReplyDeleteWhen I first heard of Hawaii (years ago) I thought that it was just one island...but then I realized that Hawaii consists of many islands!! Big island looks beautiful for sure, those beaches and volcanoes...but I wouldn't swim with turtles and manta rays though! #traveltuesday
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing place. I've always wanted to go to Hawaii but it's just so difficult (and expensive!) to get to from the UK. There are so many cool places to explore - lava tubes, beaches, waterfalls...! Thanks for letting me travel there vicariously :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for linking up on Travel Tuesday. Big Island sounds so amazing... All the marine life you described.. I wanna fly there right now! Is it really safe to swim with manta rays? Every time I hear of rays, I remember the crocodile hunter being killed by one. *eeps* But the thought of seeing a hundred dolphins... Sounds so magical.
ReplyDeleteMy understanding is that Manta's have no stinger (infact they may not even be the same family - tho I could be making that up). The best bit is that sharks and Mantas don't like each other, so if there are mantas, there are no sharks (that's what I was told, anyway!)
DeleteI can't wait to go!
ReplyDeleteSO beautiful!
ReplyDeleteHawaii is one of my dream trips. Hopefully one day soon #fearlessfamtrav
ReplyDeleteAh man, this makes me want to go to Hawaii more than ever! #fearlessfamtrav
ReplyDeleteOne year when we visited the Big Island we rented an airplane and flew around to other nearby islands. It was a fun way to explore. - Margy
