Day trip to Gozo

We had very little time in Malta and I'd heard wonderful things about Gozo, so for ease I booked a day trip tour to explore the island. Big mistake. Sometimes it just all goes wrong.

The transport was an hour late, an hour we were standing by the side of the road with nothing to do and nowhere to sit. However, not to let it ruin the day, we enjoyed the ferry ride over to the island once the chaos of the boarding queue was dealt with.

On arrival we boarded a bus and first stop was a photo opportunity of the Blue Lagoon and Comino. Then it went pretty much down hill from there. The next stop was not a craft village, but a shop to see how the handcrafts were made and buy them.

After way too long, we headed to the Basilica of Ta'Pinu near Gharb. The Virgin Mary spoke to a woman in 1883 and the small chapel replaced with the large church in the 1920's. Important to the locals and religious, but there seemed to me to be many other prettier churches that we passed.

It was on to the Azur Window that collapsed a few weeks before and Fungus Rock, where the Knights of St John collected medicinal plants. There is also an interesting inland sea in this area, and some sea fossils high up on the clifftop, so it is still an interesting spot to allow a little time to explore. If driving, head to Dwejra Bay.

Then we stopped on the outskirts of Victoria and had a terrible lunch in a restaurant that caters to tours yet was overwhelmed with the number of people. Should you self drive, there are plenty of lovely looking restaurants in the main square, Pjazza Indipendenza.

Il Kastell is stunning and allow plenty of time to explore. Alas we'd spent too long at the horrible lunch and the craft shop so were trying to see all of Victoira in a very short time. The fort is from the 15th century and holds an old prison, a catherdral, many museums and some bunkers from WWII. You could easily spend a couple of hours here, not forty minutes, as we were allowed.

Unfortunately for us, we had to rush off to catch the ferry. Due to chaos at the port, with tours all arriving at once and intersecting in the line, we ended with a lot of yelling and screaming at the gate while my little girl and I were on one side of the barrier and the other 3 in the family not being allowed on. Strangely the guide was trying to get me on the boat and leave them there. Thankfully I refused as I later discovered I had all the money and they had nothing.

However, after much delay, we made it home unscathed (except the little one who now has a fear of ferries...oh, yay!).

If I could do it over? There is a lot to see in Gozo. I'd make my own way over and hire a car or take our car on the ferry. I regret thinking I'd made it easier, when in fact I ruined a whole day for everyone. Too much time was wasted at bad stops and the good things left unexplored. I will admit this could be just a one off because our tour was an hour late even starting. A tour does, in theory, take the stress out of sightseeing so it pays to do your research and make sure it is suitable.

On the positive, it didn't rain and we did see some lovely things.

  1. I never made it to Gozo when I visited Malta. Will do next time, because there's gonna be a next time!

  2. I am so sorry to hear about your experience? Did you complained or asked for compensation? I had a similar experience when I visited Vienna. I booked a day trip to the Wachau Valley and the tour ended up being mediocre. It started late because we were waiting for certain people (not fair to the rest) and I am sure we missed the first stop because of that (they acted like nothing happened). Once it was finished, I wrote back to the company expressing my sour taste. This year, we cruised the Rhine River and did it on our own. It was way better. #wkendtravelinspiration

  3. Aw man, what a shame. Totally not your fault though, you weren't to know, plus it may have been quite fine if you'd not had the hour delay - I understand your disappointment but I hope you don't feel like you let everyone down! You live and learn. I've still not been to Malta or Gozo, it just seems to always slip under my radar! Thanks for linking and I hope we see you again next time! #KCACOLS

  4. oh so sorry to hear you had a bad experience on your visit to Gozo. You never know with tours, they can be good, great or terrible. We are going to Malta next year, so I will make a mental note of your experience. Happy travels. and thank you for stopping by my blog last week.

  5. That's too bad, Gozo is such a lovely island and there is so much to see there. In my experience, too many of these tours around the world make stops for shopping that only benefit the shop and the tour operator. Thanks for linking up this week, #wkendtravelinspiration!

  6. Oh no! Gozo looks so interesting. I think the biggest challenge with travel is trying to fit everything in and you really have to take a chance on these tours sometimes to do that. Sorry it didnt work out and maybe you'll go back there soon? Thanks for joining #FarawayFiles

  7. My other half, David, hates tours and your experience is very much the sort of thing he always expects will happen. We would have taken our car across but the downside of that is sometimes you miss things because you just don't know they are there. At least you will remember the day for a while. If find it is usually the worst experiences which stick in my memory - and much later on become amusing dinner party stories.

    1. My thought had been it would be too stressful to try to navigate and see things by ourselves in such a short time frame...but yes, it's the thing in Malta we talk about the most and the kids keep saying, when I suggest something they don't want to do, "Do you mean really great like that day in Gozo?" (jerks! ;)

  8. I've had tours where you are led to a "artisan's" shop to buy souvenirs. I like to watch the road in and look for alternatives that are near the destination. I'd much rather walk around the local streets than buy trinkets at the tourist trap.

  9. Sorry it wasn't a great experience, but it is a beautiful place that I don't know much about! I hate feeling like you are at the mercy of something you aren't enjoying. I appreciate your honesty and for sharing with #FarawayFiles, Erin

  11. This was a "worst case" organized tour...
I have long time wanted to visit Malta/Gozo. A good idea to do it on our own :)

  12. So sorry for your horrible experience. Sometimes it is better to do a DIY on these small islands.

  13. ...I like to go and see things on my own terms, organized tours just don't sound appealing to me. Thanks so much for finding my blog and linking this post. I hope that you will be able to return again.

  14. Sorry to hear about that! That's the problem with organised tours I guess, it should (in theory) be more convenient and save planning on your part, but the downside is less control over the itinerary. Sounds like they were more focused on the shopping part than the sightseeing part!

  16. It looks so beautiful, sorry it felt like a bit of a disastrous trip. I went to Malta for a holiday when I was a child but don't remember much #KCACOLS

  18. That's why I never go on guided tours. I prefer to do things at my own pace and stay off the path if I feel so inclined. It's definitely more work as you have to do a lot more research, but in my opinion, it's worth it. Thanks so much for linking up at #KCACOLS. Hope you come back again next time

  19. I'm sorry to hear you had such a difficult and troubled day trip to Gozo. It definitely sounds like the tour company was to blame for a lot of the problems. I visited Gozo back in January and spent a week there and I loved it. It may be small but if you take it slowly you can really fill up a week. I hope you get a chance to return and see all the great spots it has. #wkendtravelinspiration

  20. Gosh, what a nightmare, and how irritating given that the whole point was to try to take the stress out of the short time you had to see the place.

  21. We are headed to Malta this winter for a short stop. I love all the photos and information you've provided as I try to piece together what we should do for our time on the island... clearly not take the bus tour that runs late! ha! (So sorry that happened to you but it seems that you recovered well.)

  22. Travelling to Malta has been on my wishlist list for a long time and including Gozo an absolute must! I've seen so many gorgeous pics and heard so many good things from fellow travellers ... So I can imagine your frustration of having just one day for Gozo and then getting it ruined by a useless tour company. The whole of taking an organised daytrip is that you want to see as much as possible without the stress. I wil keep in mind to rather DIY should I finally get the opportunity to travel there.
