One our last morning in Hobart, the kids wanted to sleep in until check out so I took off for two hours to explore what I could early morning.

A short walk to the University Rose garden, you see the stunningly restored 1850's
Domain House.

Hitting the Queens Domain, it was hard to believe I was still in the city. There were colourful birds and some quokkas that I chased for photos unsuccessfully.

Walking aimlessly, I stumbled across the Gunpowder Magazine, part of the Queens Battery, built in 1841, that had not been noted in my guide book or on my map. If you head up the jogging track, away from the harbour, you will see it.

An easy walk down hill and I made my way down to Beaumaris Zoo, the ruins of where the last thylacine died in 1936. The zoo closed in 1937 but the gates have some history boards on display.

The memorial gates tell stories of animal escapes and the zoo history. There's a sad feeling, as you see the black & white photos of it's heyday viewed through the modern lens.

Next up was a stroll through the very lovely Botanic Gardens, which include a Sub Antarctic Plant House, as well as beautiful Chinese, Japanese and European feature gardens.

The gardens are charming and really deserved more time, so you could easily visit and spend a few hours there pottering about. There are food venues too if you want a takeaway picnic or dine.

Water features and lots of bridges will keep the kids entertained.

Heading towards the harbour, you en twist back to the city. But the delights don't end here.

Lastly, I strolled past Government House, where cattle grazed on the paddock out the front of the manicured garden. It was a delightful scene, and hard to believe you were so close to the city centre.

Returning via different streets, I discovered the Bahai centre, but it wasn't open at that early hour.

I returned to the hotel after a two hour easy round trip, taking my time for photos.

It was a wonderful exploration to see the other side of the city, the nature and fauna, and of course the public spaces that are used for recreation.
Sometimes the best way to experience a city is to wander, as surprise is the best part of discovery.

wonderful walk. I fully agree that the best way to experience a city is to wander, as surprise is the best part of discovery.
ReplyDeletethanks for visiting my blog and leaving a kind comment. as for the situation in Belgium - Brussels was more or less OK and spared, the southern part of the country was affected a lot by floods.

ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos Lydia. I loved Tasmania when we visited in 2015 and I will definitely be going back. We spent a few days in Hobart during our trip but I don't recall seeing any of the things pictured here which goes to show that I simply must go back!
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to believe some of these pics were so close to the city - they have the feel of being out in the country. Gorgeous buildings and the zoo must have felt a tad eerie.
ReplyDeleteOh Hobart how I love thee! I've been to Hobart a few times but never to any of these places so if I ever get there again, I'll be sure to bookmark your posts and follow in your footsteps. How lucky you were to get there at all, interstate travel seems such a distant dream now!
ReplyDeleteHobart is a beautiful city and your photos of your walk show us a very different side , we might normally miss, so thanks! #lifethisweek
ReplyDeleteIt's unbelievable that this is so close to a city. Your pictures and words were the perfect antidote for not wanting to follow the optional prompt......
ReplyDeleteThank you for being part of this week's Life This Week link up. I enjoy seeing the posts linked by the community of friendly bloggers every Monday ...and you are one of those. Next week's optional prompt is Question. I hope to see you then. Denyse.
You'll be pleased to know after my outburst Monday (or whenever it was, who can tell) I have found a way to cover the prompt without being all angry, gloom and doom....Ha!

What a wonderful travel diary. It makes me happy to see pictures of landscapes I would never go to. Tasmania seems a land blessed by the gods
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for taking us on a trip to Tasmania! I keep on dreaming abour returning to Australia with the monkeys, given pandemic restrictions I reckon a couple of years still away from that dream! Friends in Melbourne stay exactly by the harbour where the vessels for Tasmania go, it's so familiar and wonderful and still so far away ! Wonderful #CulturedKids material, thanks for joining us! X
