Dining with the best view in Sydney

I've been trying for awhile and we finally got into Luke's Table, the restaurant on the top of the South Pylon of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. For a few weeks I eagarly awaited our day...which unfortunately poured with rain and was gray and miserable. I was bitterly disapointed but it was an all weather, non refundable event so I put on my best smile determined to enjoy it.

Luckily, Sydney with its bizarre current weather patterns, decided to stop raining and even let a few patches of blue appear just as we arrived.

You climb the Pylon stairs and meet in the museum. There is a welcome drink and then tour the musuem. learning a little of the history of the building of the bridge as you ascend. Once at the top, there's canapes and bubbles while you marvel at the magnificent view on the balcony.

The dinner is inside but between courses I ducked out for more photos, and we all went outside for the sunset.

The food is lovely, and we had a sensational lobster salad with fingerlimes which was my favourite dish of the night. The dessert, which on paper I thought I wouldn't like, was delicious and I devoured it. It was bursting with a crisp freshness (the apple and lime) that balanced the creaminess of the mousse.

Luke Mangan was there, mingling with the diners and talking a little of how it came to be (and his other huge community enterprise - the Sydney long lunches). Not just a restuaranter, he is innovative and ambitious when it comes to ideas for dining, as well as food offerings.

The table is for 20, and while we went with friends, we talked to those next to us and there's a very friendly communal atmosphere as you are all sharing this very spectial experience. People were there for their anniversary, their birthday and for us, it was our delayed Valentine's Day celebration...whatever the reason, there is no better restuarant view in Sydney!

After dinner, quite by chance, we were treated to fireworks above the Opera House to top off the night. It really was an unforgettable experience.

Overseas visitors, if you can time it with your trip, it would be the ultimate Sydney postcard memory. For locals, it's a once in a lifetime way to see our beautiful city showcased.

My advice is sign up to get notified of new dates when they release. It took me almost a year of trying to finally get in!
