Winter escape secret

As the temperature drops and the school holidays approach, I start to think of places to enjoy the chilly outdoors, and get some use out of our big coats and hats. Today, because I am feeling magnanimous, I am going to share a few secrets escapes (unfortunately, primarily for Sydneysiders).

Nothing is better in winter than escaping to the country, exploring the chilly outdoor and snuggling by a fire at night, and of course, toasting marshmallows.

Every winter we have a night at the Fairmont, which is perfect for families, and if an Accor Advantage Plus member, super cheap! The added bonus is the heated indoor pool, so the kids can swim in the middle of winter. I posted about the delights of one such trip here, so you get the idea of how much fun and beauty you can squash into one 24 hour day.

Jenolan Caves is another brilliant winter escape, with hostel type accommodation as well as the more pricey but picturesque Caves House.

But this year, we've just booked a return visit to the little known Jungle Lodge. This is a lovely house with amazing views in the back of the Mount Tomah Botanical Gardens - it sleeps 10, so split the super cheap cost with a few friends.

The Southern Highlands offers chilly beauty and quaint villages, like Bundanoon. Time outdoors can include the stunning Morton National Park - a world away but less than 2 hours from Sydney.

Canberra is the other obvious choice for us - you can cover galleries as well as the great outdoors. In certain months you can even go ice skating in the middle of Civic! You might even get a chance of snow!

So there's no reason not to sneak off for a night. These little school holiday escapes are the highlight of my winters (when skiing is out of the budget, of course!) But you never know, it does snow in the mountains from time to time - keep your fingers crossed for us!

Do you have any winter escape tips? Where do you head to at this time of year?

  2. I would love to go away for a long weekend in winter where there is snow and fires and snuggles but I'm figuring any weekend away during winter is going to be in Townsville and I know that it doesn't get cold enough for snow or fires there !!!
    Have a great winter !

  5. My tip is to befriend families who own shares in a ski-lodge.

  6. LOL when you live near the snow it's amazing how many friends you have after the first national frost :P
Seriously tho, even this close, and even with gear, it's still a costly event. Used to be very ticked that the ex hooked up with someone who had a share in a skilodge - so not fair!

We're planning to do some day aways - can't go far with animals at home. So thought we might do similar to Sydney - where we tented in our backyard, used the bbq and the indoor toilet, but otherwise behaved like we were on hols.
Thinking that we can take the dirt backroads to the Cascades. That will test out the 4x4. And check out that bush cemetery out the back of beyond. Really, soo many things.
For an early spring break we might just head to the Yarrangobilly Caves, where they have thermal pools. The thermal hot water and the freezingly brisk air will make it seem like we could afford a trip to sweden :P

  7. I'd love to be able to have all of that close enough for a weekend trip away! We went away for a weekend in November last year to a place about 3 hours from us and it was just perfect..I almost convinced Paul to stay another day.

Thanks for linking up with us at The Lounge!

  8. We really should head to the blue mountains. Maybe next year when the baby is 2 and travelling might be less of a mission!!

  11. Here in the west we often have a winter escape to Margaret River. Great coastal scenery and who couldn't love warming up with some great wine. Thanks for linking up with #TheWeeklyPostcard and posting about a great winter getaway, very apt with the weather here in Perth today.

  12. I have to agree woth Lyn above, as West Aussie we enjoy heading south and making the most of all the delicious produce in the region and making the most that there are less crowds.
