Due to the budget restraints and the cost of getting a family of 5 out to the reef, we opted to self drive our sight seeing up to Cape Tribulation. The cost was minimal, after car hire ($30) and entry fees.
First up was the picturesque Mossman Gorge. The cost is reasonable - $20 shuttle to the rainforest (for the family). The bush walks are easy enough for a 4 year old, though you see a range of trees and forest. Mossman Gorge is 80 kms from Cairns, or a mere 10 minutes from Port Douglas. Mossman Gorge is the southern part of the World Heritage listed Daintree rainforest.
The path takes you through dense trees, as well as cascading river views. While swimming is not recommended due to rapids, a number of tourists did venture in at the tiny beach viewing point.
We spent about two hours there, then continued up towards Cape Tribulation. The scenery on the way up is truly beautiful, with rocky mountains over looking the cane fields.
The costly part of the trip is the unavoidable car ferry - which is $23 return. You buy the ticket on arrival. The ferry crosses regularly between 6am and midnight. There are crocodiles on this river, so no swimming and take care on the riverbanks. This is also the last place you get mobile reception. If you have the time, there are a number of crocodile cruises leaving from here.
There is a stunning look out just five minutes past the river, the Daintree Alexandra Range Lookout - from here you can see where the river meets the sea, the Low Isles and Snapper Island, among other things.
While there were many warning signs for Cassowary crossing, I was very disappointed that we didn't see any in the wild. However as the native birds are big and quite dangerous, it was probably for the best.
There are a myriad of other places to stop - the Daintree ice cream factory at Floraville and the Daintree Discovery Centre with its treetop walk are the top two choices, plus the Jungle Canopy Surfing if you've got the budget.
We stopped at the beach at Cape Tribulation - but there is no swimming, due to crocodiles. It has a pretty look out but be warned it is the chief stop for the tourist buses, so for us, it was very crowded.
My pick is the little beach further south, where we stopped on the return journey - we had the vast expanse of sand to ourselves, and it really highlighted what a wonderful piece of paradise the far north of Queensland is.
We headed home as the afternoon sun began to fade, and lamented not having another day in this part of the world to take our time and see more of what it has to offer.

I have been fortunate enough to have visited this gorgeous part of a Australia a few times. Even luckier is a FIL that lives up there so there will be more trips on the horizon.
ReplyDeleteI love that you have showcased a few things I haven't seen and given me ideas for our up and coming trips.
I loved the photos too :)
Thanks for taking photos of your trip. I guess you had a long walk in the sun before enjoying the white sandy beach. There’s a lot of things to do in Cape Tribulation, many of which cannot be found in other places. Hope you enjoyed your ‘holidaze’!
ReplyDeleteWhenever people mention North of Australia, the only thing that comes to my mind are crocodile. And imagine the place to be all swarms and crocodiles. Thank you for the lovely photos to prove me wrong. :P
ReplyDeleteThank for rekindling some lovely memories of the Daintree. It is beautiful place to discover.
ReplyDeleteThat is such a beautiful part of the world. Mossman Gorge is fantastic...and the Daintree and Cape Trib are truly special.
ReplyDeleteI loved the Daintree and Cape Tribulation. I have some extremely fond memories of the place so this was a lovely reminder! I'm glad you enjoyed your trip, and how lucky to have that giant beach all to yourself! Well, aside from the crocs of course...
ReplyDeleteHi Lydia - You have some beautiful photos of a stunning area of Australia. Thanks for reminding me just how magnificent it is! :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm aching to do this trip, last time we had this planned I was heavily pregnant and didn't want to isolate myself on a roadtrip for a couple of weeks so we postponed. Will have to get onto planning it again I think.
ReplyDeleteThanks for joining in #wednesdaywanderlust
Looks beautiful!!

ReplyDeleteWow I love the sound of Daintree, it looks magical, but yeah the crocs would be a huge issue up there :)
ReplyDeleteI love reading your posts about Australia, Lydia, I feel like walking with you wherever you go. I know very little about this continent and you always fill in my gaps. Lovely pictures of Mossman Gorge. Thank you for joining me for #TheWeeklyPostcard.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a great place to spend Valentine's Day! We were excited to spend the day in our new home in Scotland:)
ReplyDeleteSo beautiful! I have a soft spot for rainforests since I grew up visiting the ones in Puerto Rico. Well, in there we didn't have crocodiles (and they are in the mountains).
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely gorgeous! Thanks to your stories I am really looking forward to seeing Queensland for myself some day. #TheWeeklyPostcard
ReplyDeleteLooks like a beautiful visit to North Queensland. Love that jellyfish sign, although I wouldn't be swimming there.
ReplyDeleteI love that trip and like you I always wished we had longer in the area. Next time we visit I plan to stay longer, still it is a lovely day trip. It was lovely revisiting through your photos.
ReplyDeleteWe visited the Daintree on our first trip to Australia, and we had a great guide, saw a cassowary...we loved it!
ReplyDeleteYour photos look so familiar as we did the exact trip a few years ago. The Daintree and Cape Tribulation are such beautiful regions in North Queensland. I would love to return one of these days.
ReplyDeleteThe crocodiles sound scary!! Haven't been to this part of Australia before because of my fear for crocodiles.. hehe. #TravelTuesday
ReplyDeleteIt may not be the Great Barrier Reef but the Daintree is a beautiful part of the world in its own right. And as you said, much more affordable for a big family.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, we didn't make it this far when we visited the Great Barrier Reef area last year. But we have tried the Daintree chocolate which is wonderful! Thanks for sharing your pretty photos! #WeekendWanderlust
ReplyDeleteGood to know that we could travel Australia also on a budget. Your figures help to plan our trip a lot. #WeekendWanderlust www.travelbug.co
ReplyDeleteWe are yet to visit Queensland so thanks for the tour. We were in NT this year - LOTS of crocs there! Happy travels. I've enjoyed meeting you today over on Randomosity.
