This year we headed down for the Marathon weekend, and due to the Essendon fiasco, had ceased our annual pilgrimage to watch the footy. It had been about 5 years since our last visit and a LOT had changed
.
In a brief overview, here's a few travel tips:
2. Dinner on Sunday night in the CBD is a full house so book. (Chin Chin was spilling into the street, Coda was very full and we took the last table at Lucy Lui's).
3. For traveling about, if not using Uber and Taxis, grab the Myki card (visitor full day) at 7-11s or the Visitor centre. If you visit a lot, get a real card.

4. Hosier Lane is a waste of time. Cut through it by all means but seek out the street art elsewhere.
5. Check out the little galleries in the CBD. I went to 4 galleries on 2 streets, while just walking around to other places.

6. If you are booking a big group dinner, get in early as lots of restaurants won't take bookings for more than 8, or insist on a set menu. The carbo load dinner for runners took awhile to sort out.
7. If you do automatic check out, check your invoice that is emailed. I payed one invoice only to discover an extra $105 for something we didn't have had been whacked on my credit card.

8. Get googling. By accident we came across a latin fiesta in a laneway. There is so much on with with official festivals and events, but there seems to be a plethora of other fun to be had if you know where to look.

9. Traffic to the airport can be a nightmare. Allow enough time.
10. Start planning your next trip as soon as you can! You'll need longer than a weekend!

ReplyDeleteLots of great tips. I didn't know about the visitor Myki card!
ReplyDeleteI love Melbourne, lived in rural Victoria for 2 years and visited often then and since my return to Perth. I can't believe you are one of the few to say Hosier Lane is a waste of time, but like you found some amazing street art elsewhere.
ReplyDeleteWe are often in Melbourne to visit family, but seldom get into the city! Salivating thinking about all those great restaurants!
ReplyDeleteWe haven't been to Melbourne in several years, but my sister lives outside of the city a little ways, so maybe it's time for a return trip. I'll keep these tips handy! Thanks for joining #wkendtravelinspiration!
ReplyDeleteI am more of a Sydney girl myself and can't seem to understand what the fuss is about in Melbourne. Maybe I should pay it another visit to help me change my mind. :)
ReplyDeleteAll perfectly good advice to get the most out of Melbourne.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pics, it sounds amazing. Hope I get to visit someday! #KCACOLS

ReplyDeleteOne of my favourite places to visit. I've had a couple of quick trips in the past year, so not nearly enough time to do much exploring. Must head back soon.
ReplyDeleteIt's been 8 years since I last went to Melbourne. I used to go there every year when my best friend was studying in Melbourne University. Interestingly I haven't seen any of the things you photographed. Guess Melbourne has really changed quite a bit over the past few years! #CityTripping
