The gem of Bora Bora - Conrad Bora Bora Nui

The moment you are met at the airport, you feel welcomed. Transferred to the resort by boat, on arrival each guest party is personally met and escorted to check in.  Once the formalities are finalised over a welcome drink, our staff member took us on a detailed tour of the resort on the way to our room. She pointed out the activities, the complimentary bikes, the spa and the walks we might want to do for the views. The restaurants were explained in detail as we went past them and other information to make the most of our stay. By the time we reached our room, we were fully versed in what was on offer and how to organise it.

The majority of the resorts in Bora Bora are on islets around the main island, and the Conrad Bora Bora Nui is on a private island away from the other resorts, so the feeling of seclusion is complete, and the planes don't fly over you on their way to the airport.

While Bora Bora is the ideal honeymoon vacation, or the destination for those seeking marine creatures in abundance, the Conrad Bora Bora Nui also offers entertainment and accommodation for families too.

Our overwater bungalow was new and immaculate. On arrival at the room, we were demonstrated how things work - including the bluetooth speakers that played on our deck, the hammocks and where to snorkel. Each overwater bungalow seems to have coral just out the front (the ones near ours definitely did) so swimming at the room is worthwhile, with plenty of fish and one day we even saw a ray!

The resort offers plenty of free activities as well as excursions. While there are four restaurants, the resort has a low cost shuttle that goes almost hourly for sightseeing, shopping and lunch or dinner in town.

The sushi restaurant and bar has glass flooring, but the real appeal of this restaurant, other than the standard of food and imaginative drinks, is the sunset views from the deck. During our three night, we ate there twice.

The Conrad offers the best sunset views on the island, due to location and layout.

Breakfast is served on the balcony overlooking the beach, and is a glorious way to start the day. The food is good on the buffet, with some Tahitian specialties as well as the usual fruits and French pastries. There is a menu for the hot dishes, all made to order.

Lunch is a more laid back affair at the beach restaurant or pool bar, both offering sea views, and one with sand beneath your feet.

An easy walk up the hill to the look out takes you through colourful, exotic gardens gives beautiful views of the island beyond and the resort.

One of the highlights for me, while paddle boarding in the front lagoon, a shark came and played along side me. Alas, as we went into shore, and I ran to get my camera, she swam off. Their project of building coral gardens is paying off, with the sea life it's attracting.

For the non ocean swimmers, there's a pool and flavoured water, sunscreen and aloe vera lotion all on offer poolside.

There are plenty of excursions to see marine life, and we spent a wonderful day chasing manta ray and stopping at an intact coral garden (one of the best we've seen around the world - apparently due to the 'fresh' water that comes in over the reef every day) and a 'fish garden' that I adored. So many colourful fish, all different types, at one point swarming around me, tickling my skin! It was extraordinary. We stopped also for the eagle rays but there was only one that day (we saw more in the same spot another day, but that's for a different post).

I loved our stay in this resort, and I think the Conrad is extremely focused on guest enjoyment. That lifts it ahead of other resorts, and makes for a very special holiday. If visiting Bora Bora, I advise moving around and staying in a few resorts, but end the trip with the Conrad as you won't be disappointed. It was the definitely the highlight of our trip.
