Mosman Art Trail

On the weekend, my Wednesday club and I decided to try out the Mosman Art Trail. It's meant to be 10 km of a coastal walk, with stops along the way where you see the the inspiration of famous paintings of the famous Australian artists that lived or worked there.

It was not the best weather so there was a bit of dodging muddy and water soaked track.

Some of the views (of the paintings) were obscured by tree growth.

On the whole, it's a gorgeous way to spend the morning and you could stop for lunch at Balmoral at the many kiosks or cafes if you timed it correctly.

Stunning harbour views for all different angles, and many hidden little beaches dot the track. There are also signs along the way of the animals to look out for, though we didn't see anything other than birds.

We parked near Reid Park and began at the marker for painting 1.

We actually stopped at maker 9, but had somehow walked 10 kms by then, so I'm not entirely sure how that happened or if the whole walk is actually longer than 10 kms total.

The map is here. There is also audio by Claudia Karvan on each of the works, artist and history, however we didn't listen to those (you need your phone and click on each artwork when you see the makers).

I notice on the website it notes the markers that are wheelchair accessible but I think they mean if you drive to those markers as the coastal path would not work with wheelchairs due to uneven ground and stairs (& at the moment mud).

It's a really great way to spend a few hours. We then ubered back to the car to head home.

Stunning Sydney walk, but with a bit of history and art to enhance it!

  5. I loved that. I have driven and parked (free!) at Bradley's Head on a weekday. I need to walk around parts of the area because I LOVE the art of Arthur Streeton who painted around Cremorne, camping there as he painted. He did the painting I love of the Hawkesbury River. Free parking, is available, for NSW Parks & Wildlife areas with a annual permit obtained if you are on a pension. Something I learned about a while back.

  14. There is a similar trail near me in Melbourne. The changes between the pictures and today are remarkable - and more than a little sad.
