Street Art in Singapore

While graffiti is still illegal (with jail time) in Singapore, the city has taken to street art in a big way. Every neighbourhood has beautiful murals, often harking back to the history of the area. See the Chinatown murals here.

The Peranakan museum area is no exception, now a colourful part of town (and also street plantings to remind you of the fist Botanic Garden that grew there. The museum has a gorgeous statue of a man and child waving to their wife & mother on the balcony.

Peranakan is the ethnic group of Singapore born Malay Chinese (though there are Indonesian aspects too) dating back to the 15th century. We passed a gorgeous Peranakan restaurant, which I'm tempted to try next time (though I had planned on going to Candlenut but missed out - book early!)

A worthwhile detour if on the way to Fort Canning Park or the National Museum or Children's Museum (formerly the Philatelic Museum).
