The Outsiders - The Sandrew Collection

EDIT: This has sadly closed. Hopefully it will return

I was in Melbourne for the Kusama exhibition and booked lunch at Supernormal, one of my favourite restaurants. We strolled up from the NGV via Hosier Lane, Melbourne's most famous laneway for it's street art. I would argue it's not the best laneway in Melbourne for street art but there is a magnificent Adnate there so it is always worth checking out.

As we rounded the corner, there was a new gallery (167 Flinders Lane) and as we had time to kill, we popped in.

I am so glad we did.

It is an exceptional collection of work by renowned Street Artists -local and international. There was a whole room of Banksy works, including installations. There were works by Adnate, Rone and Invader, my personal faves (and pretty popular with the Archibald judges too).

There's a studio with some heritage pieces which was a good contrast to the evolution of the form.

There are works that will make you laugh, and think, and be awed by the beauty.

The collection is owned by a couple, Sandra Powell and Andrew King, and apparently the gallery changes the works displayed each month. They have the largest private collection of street art in Australia. The most amazing thing is entry is free.

It is inconceivable that Melbourne didn't have a street art gallery until now, and the government really should consider a permanent space with both room for indoor and outdoor works. When you see all the Australian talent in one room, it's almost overwhelming how under appreciated this form is.

If you haven't been, this is a must visit when in Melbourne.
