The best things about Sydney are free: the sunshine's free, and the harbour's free, and the beach is free. Russell Crowe

I was last at North Head in 2017 but friends are out from Greece so yesterday we headed off for a walk. The upgraded path and look outs are spectacular.

It's an easy walk from the car park (Parking was mere $5 all day - unheard of in Sydney!) and the Fairfax loop would be less than a kilometre all up, with two lovely look outs (where you can sit) and stunning views over to South Head  along the way. The two headlands, known as The Heads, are the gateway into Sydney by sea.

There's a little artillery box from the war, though it is fenced off but you can see inside.

The wild flowers were just beginning to appear and I guess in a month or so it will be sprinkled with colours in the greenery.

The trees show the signs of the fire in 2019 (?) but the shrubs and bushes are back with a vengeance.

We didn't eat at the cafe, though the views are magnificent. We headed over to Freshwater for the famous porchetta panini at  Pilu Baretto (the little cafe & beach bar of the 2 hatted Pilu at Freshwater restaurant) and a walk along Freshwater beach. (Note the parking here is a more hefty $10 an hour).

You can also explore the old Quarantine Station next door, but the hospital, wharf and beach were closed off for some reason so for us it was just a rather long walk for nothing, as you couldn't really see it all from the roads we could walk on.

I then left my friends in Manly to catch the ferry into Circular Quay and the Opera House, and drove home.

(Note the waves were really wild because of the pending cyclone up north, and the beach was closed).

It was a fabulous reminder of how breath takingly beautiful this city is, if you make the effort.

  6. That's a great quote from Russell Crowe and so true Lydia! Your walk sounds great except for the closure of some spots. The harbour really is spectacular, especially on a sunny day!
